Anna Ford - Sainsbury's

Anna Ford - Sainsbury's
Non-executive Director and Chair of the Corporate Responsibility Committee

Perhaps most famous as an ex-BBC Newsreader, Anna joined the board of Sainsbury’s in 2007. She is chair of the Corporate Responsibility committee and reports to the Board on all matters.

"When I joined the board of Sainsbury’s, I already knew the company had a fine history, and a reputation for taking its responsibilities towards customers seriously. But in the last year I have been able to see for myself just how much innovative work has been done across the whole field of Corporate Responsibilty and Sustainability, since the Steering Group was set up in 2001.

The five principles laid down by that Group, namely The best for food and health, Sourcing with integrity, Respect for our environment, Making a positive difference to our community and creating A Great Place to Work, are not just add-ons, they are embedded in the company’s daily planning and actions, right at the heart of its policy-making. This work has already been recognised by the awards that have come from a variety of professional bodies.

Ethical and Sustainable behaviour in business are principles close to my heart, and so I’m dedicated to the job I’ve been given in chairing the Corporate Responsibility Committee and reporting directly to the Board on all these matters. I can verify that there’s a constant monitoring of every aspect of these vital issues by teams of people working to improve Sainsbury’s already good record.

We know we can always do more. There is today an increasing and profound public interest in matters of health, the sustainable use of natural materials, trading fairly with developing communities, supporting British farmers, sourcing responsibly and in caring for our shared environment. Sainsbury’s shares those interests, continues to lead and not to follow and is dedicated to delivering the best".

Tim Smit - The Eden Project

Tim Smit -  The Eden Project
Co-founder and Chief Executive

Tim is Chief Executive and co-founder of the Eden Project near St Austell in Cornwall. The Eden Project is a leading example of Social Enterprise and an extraordinary hybrid - a hugely successful commercial attraction and a respected scientific institution. Eden began as a dream in 1995 and opened its doors to the public in 2000, since when more than 6 million people have come to see what was once a sterile pit turned into a cradle of life containing world-class horticulture and startling architecture symbolic of human endeavour. It demonstrates once and for all that sustainability is not about sandals and nut cutlets, it is about good business practice and the citizenship values of the future.

Tim will speak about his success in bringing profit and principle together and discuss his aims to work with partners to improve our environmental, economic and social health, from the food we eat to the clothes we wear. Tim is a challenging speaker, controversial in both style and content. To read an article by him, please click here

Richard Leafe was appointed as the new Chief Executive of the Lake District National Park Authority (LDNPA) in summer 2007, having previously been the North West Regional Director of Natural England. A geography graduate from Sheffield University, and a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, Richard  held a variety of management positions at Natural England – and its predecessor English Nature – since 1990. His daring and often controversial vision for the next 25 years includes turning over a new leaf for the country's best know National Park with an "actions speak louder than words" attitude.

Richard will be presenting at the Impact Conference on the theme of "Sustainability in the National Park", providing a context and introduction to the Lake Windermere Champagne Cruise on the second day.
